It's time to move to Pipelines as Code

We started with CI, then we introduced Configuration Management, evolved towards Infrastructure as Code – but we still lag behind on pipelines, we are too reliant on the tools we use and we don’t really apply the best practices of the industry. Is it difficult to move to Pipelines as Code? What should I do to start the journey? If I am already there, what can I do to make it scale at an organisational level? These questions (and many more!) will find answers in this session, shedding light on how and why we should move to Pipelines as Code and the benefits that come out of this migration.

Using Azure DevOps to build and deploy static website

Azure offers cheap and reliable static website hosting. If you want to use static website generators, such as Jekyll or Hugo, you need to install and maintain a builder and many dependencies. That can be tricky and time-consuming. In this session, I will explain how to utilize Azure DevOps to automate the process of building a static website inside of a container and deploying it to Azure storage.

Supercharge your App Service to a Global scale

When architecting applications today, making then globally available is the standard. When designing the infrastructure for a new application we need to start from the premises that we have a global disperse customer base. This is a good challenge for Azure Architects. Creating global applications is no easy piece, we can hit a lot of concerns, not only technical but also business-related and even legal. In this session, we will check how Azure App Service can help us reach this global application goal and how other related services, like: Azure Front Door, Traffic Manager, Azure Storage, Azure CDN, Azure Functions, Cognitive Search, Azure Redis Caches, Cosmos DB and messaging services can help you to create a global scale application. Expect a heavily-demo depended on session, based on the real-world experience in implementing these services in several customers.

Using Azure Policy initiatives for organizational governance

Challenges arise within a cloud environment when resources can be created that may affect, cost, security, or regulatory jurisdictions. Role-based access control (RBAC) and the principles of least privilege provide levels of restriction to users and groups within the environment as to what resources they can access or create, but they do not set parameters on where they can be created, the level of cost, or the security requirements. Azure policies are created, assigned, and utilized to govern the resources within your Azure subscription. Policies should be put in place based on the business, security, and financial requirements of the organization. This session will explore these three areas and examples of each that can be assigned and monitored.

Going passwordless with FIDO2 and Azure AD

We all know that passwords are the weakest link in our security ecosystems, and yet we still use them. Back in 2012, the Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) Alliance was founded with a mission to work on a passwordless authentication protocol. In 2019 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) adopted the FIDO2 core Webauthn protocol as an official web standard. This has made passwordless authentication a reality that can be scaled across the Internet. Come to this session, and John Craddock will provide you with a deep-dive understanding of FIDO2 and its associated protocols. You will discover how Microsoft has integrated FIDO2 into Windows 10 and Azure AD banishing the weaknesses of passwords and taking secure authentication into the future.

TDD and the Terminator - An introduction to Test Driven Development

Getting started with Test Driven Development (TDD) can be very challenging. It requires a different mindset and approach to writing and developing code. However, once in that mindset, it is very difficult not to write tests first.

But why bother writing tests first?

In this session, we will go through the reasons for writing tests before coding, look at architecture and design principles, such as SOLID and see how it all comes together to create a more testable and maintainable application.

I will show you how to get started writing tests first with practical examples on how to reprogram a T800 series Terminator so you can start using TDD in your own applications (or killer robots from the future).

Customer Management at Scale with Azure Lighthouse

How does a Managed Service Provider administer services across dozens or even hundreds of customer subscriptions?

Managed Service Providers (MSPs) deliver value by offloading the administrative and maintenance burden of running your own applications. In the Azure world, those applications are typically hosted in customer subscriptions, associated with the customer’s Azure AD tenant. Until recently, managing applications at scale across multiple subscriptions and tenant presented a huge challenge. Azure Lighthouse is a game-changing service that solves this problem, allowing delegated resource management and cross-tenant management experiences.

In this session, we’ll review the capabilities of Azure Lighthouse, explain the key lighthouse concepts, and show you how to get started with the service.

Introducing Chaos Engineering to a mature organisation is more than just technology

Like most technology innovation, Chaos Engineering has both a technical and a organisational aspect to its success. Unlike some technology innovations, it is often scoffed at on first mention due to the word “chaos”. Chaos Engineering may simulate chaos, but it is far from disorder or confusion. In this talk, Abby will share how Chaos Engineering can have benefits across an organisations people, processes and platform which will help each organisation target the learnings they most want to gain from the chaos engineering experience.

Key Tips for better API Security

The publication of the OWASP Top10 for API security last summer marked a corner stone in API security. Finally, there is a global recognition that applications based on APIs require a different approach for threat protection. In the past 18 months, more than 200 breaches have been published on https://apisecurity.io. Some very well-known company names are on that list. What did they do wrong ? How can we learn from their mistakes and take an approach that prevents most common API abuse? Our goal in this talk is to share pragmatic, direct actionable best practices. We present a methodology to “pick your battles” and focus on the most critical issues first. You will leave this session with either the great satisfaction that you’ve already done a good job to protect your APIs or an actionable TODO list to remediate issues :)
